When I was little, my mom had a great tradition of the 10 days of Christmas. For 10 days leading up to Dec. 25, my parents would surprise my sister and me with little gifts.
I’m carrying on the tradition with my son, using Advent calendars. The season of Advent is traditionally intended as a reflective exercise to preparing for Christ’s birthday. For children, it builds excitement and wonder.

One of the pricier items on the list, this calendar includes 24 miniature toy trains. It’s for ages 3 and up.
9. Disney Pixar Cars Minis Advent Calendar, $23.19
First, can we talk about the “Monsters, Inc.” reference in the price on this one? Second, if you have a “Cars” fan at home, this will be a big win. It comes with five vehicles plus some cute little world-building, storytelling pieces. For ages 3 and up.
10. CoComelon Advent Calendar, $49.99
Boy, is CoComelon divisive. Say what you will, my son loves it. It’s also become a super successful, global brand. And this Advent calendar, while on the more expensive side, is going to sell fast. It comes with 24 pieces, including character figurines and holiday accessories. For ages 3 and up.
